Guwahati, Mar 6 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday launched a project to set up handloom model village at Majuli and said that for making seamless connectivity to Majuli, the proposed bridge over river Brahmaputra connecting the island district with Nematighat will be materialised.

Though laying the foundation for the project is taking some time for meeting several technical specifications, the government is committed to complete the project for the convenience of the people of Majuli, said Sonowal while launching several projects.

Seeking cooperation of the people of Majuli, Sonowal laid the foundations of a battery of projects in the district like a model handloom village, thread mill at Kamalabari, Majuli Polytechnic and a Warehouse of one-ton capacity among others.

The Assam CM also distributed free bicycles to 700 girl students of poor families, umbrellas to 850 girl students, sewing machines to 220 women beneficiaries, solar lamps to 250 families and hand pumps to 80 farmers.

Saying that a positive transformation has been brought about in the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi led central government had come to power, Sonowal asserted that the corruption has been rooted out which was patronised by the previous government.

“The economic condition of the rural women folk of the state has been improved through various schemes. The state government is committed to ensuring that not even the poorest of the poor are denied their basic needs of food, clothes and shelter and for that purpose, initiatives like providing rice at Rs 1 per kg, building houses under PMAY, free LPG connection to women of BPL families under PMUY, providing land patta to landless indigenous people etc are taken by the government,” Sonowal said.

Later, the Assam CM also held a meeting with the satradhikars of 35 satras of Majuli and discussed the various development schemes implemented in the district.

He also reviewed the status of schemes implemented by PWD, P&RD and Water Resource Departments in a meeting held with the top officials of these departments.
