Cong releases first list of candidates for LS polls, Sonia to contest from Rae Bareli, Rahul from Amethi

New Delhi, Mar 7 (IBNS): The Congress party on Thursday announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections where it stated that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will contest for Rae Bareli and her son Rahul will once again be fielded from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

The first list comprises of candidature from 15 seats in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

It named 11 candidates from Uttar Pradesh and four from Gujarat.

However, the list has no mention of new Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The list also confirmed that the Congress would contest from at least 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The party has already stated that it would contest from all seats in the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh which sends 80 lawmakers to the Lok Sabha.

Former Union ministers Salman Khurshid, Jitin Prasad and RPN Singh will be fielded from their traditional seats of Farrukhabad, Dhaurahra and Kushi Nagar respectively.

Former UP Congress chief Nirmal Khatri will contest the election from Faizabad.

The first list was finalised at a meeting of the party's central election committee chaired by Rahul Gandhi.
