Mamata Banerjee's image among ‘famous Bengali legends’ triggers row on social media

Kolkata, Mar 8 (IBNS): A street side banner in Kolkata's IT hub in Salt Lake showcasing 'famous Bengali legends' which included images of freedom struggle hero Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore has triggered a storm in the social media because of the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the "hall of fame" along with the greats.

Netizens are discussing about the image on the social media since the picture of the blue flex went viral recently.

The image has been put up in a crucial crossing at Sector 5 in Salt Lake area and contains pictures- in two rows- of 13 eminent persons from the 19th and 20th century. The 14th image in the list is of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Several netizens have opposed the inclusion of her image in the list.

However, a controversy over the visages of Mamata Banerjee is not new. While countless posters and banners of the Chief Minister are put up across the city, she courted controversy when at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) in November the main venue Nandan was swamped by her posters- one count put it at around 200- smiling down at cine-goers.

Filmmaker Anik Dutta was the only film personality who had protested the presence of the pictures of the CM at the venue. His recent film, Bhobishyoter Bhoot (Ghost of the Future), was called off from the theatres after it was released for allegedly containing jibes as the Mamata government while many protesting the move said he had to pay the price of raising voice against the CM during the film festival.

Meanwhile, protests over the inclusion of the CM's photo among the Bengali legends spilled over in social media.

One Biswajit tweeted: "@MamataOfficial @republic @TimesNow @abpnewstv Mamata Banerjee ...a legend ????? It's an insult to all the real legends of India. Shame Mamata."

Another K Kumar Rao posted, "Mamata Banerjee sheep politics. At salt lake main junction titled legends of Bengal from the 19th and 20th century including rabindranath tagore Jagdish Chandra Basu ishwar Chandra vidyasagar total 13 eminent personalities. Pity that Mamata Banerjee image also shown there.KKRao."

One PK Prasad tweeted: "After watching #Mamata with them legends ."

Netizen Sandip Roy remarked: "Mamata Banerjee's Photo Among "Famous Bengali Legends". Don't insult those personality by framing together with her. This is too much. https://www.ndtv.com/kolkata-news/mamata-banerjees-photo-among-famous-bengali-legends-sparks-outrage-on-social-media-2004396?amp=1."
