Two jump out of train on fire and die

Kolkata, Mar 22 (UNI): At least two persons were killed when they jumped out of 15904 up Chandigarh - Dibrugarh Express, which caught fire around 11:20am near Chaterhat station, about 20 km from New Jalpaiguri, on Friday.

Official sources here said the two bodies were found by railway medical team and brought to North Bengal Medical College for autopsy.

The bodies reportedly bore no burn signs.

One engine and one luggage-cum-guard compartment got damaged in the fire.

Railway traffic in the New Jalpaiguri-Aluabari section was affected by the incident.

A fire brigrade team left from New Jalpaiguri for the site on receiving information. A railways medical team, along with an accident relief train, also left immediately for the site.

The unaffected coaches were detached and brought back to Chaterhat station by attaching another engine.

Divisional Railway Manager of Katihar, along with other senior officials from New Jalpaiguri, Katihar visited the site.

As a result of the incident, down trains 12423 and 20503 Dibrugarh - New Rajdhani Express trains, 15644 Kamakhya –Puri Express, 12508 Silchar – Trivandrum Express and 13247 Kamakhya – Rajendranagar Capital Express were diverted to run via Siliguri Jn – Bagdogra – Aluabari section.

All UP trains coming towards New Jalpaiguri are also being diverted via Aluabari – Bagdogra - Siliguri Jn.

The affected Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express left Chaterhat station at 03:35 pm for New Jalpaiguri.

Efforts are on to clear the section for restoring normal train running.

An inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northeast Frontier Railway, Kolkata, under Ministry of Civil Aviation, has been ordered into the incident.
