Bengaluru, Oct 7 (IBNS): In a major setback to J Jayalalithaa, Karnataka High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail application of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, citing her corruption as violation of human rights, media reported.

It has been learnt that, The High Court has cited Supreme Court’s stand that corruption cases should be dealt strongly.

According to media reports, while rejecting the bail plea of AIADMK chief, the Judge said that Jayalalithaa’s offence needs to seen as a violation of human rights.

The court also cited Supreme Court’s stance against corruption saying that the top court had sent out a clear message, to fast-track corruption cases.

The order means, “Amma” has to remain in jail for now.

Former TN CM on had on last Wednesday, filed the bail plea before a vacation bench of the High Court.

But the bench had adjourned the hearing till Oct 7 then.

On Tuesday, the court after opening from vacation heard the plea. The AIADMK chief had moved the Karnataka HC seeking bail and suspension of the sentence ordered by the Special CBI court that convicted her for possessing wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income.

Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani represented her in High Court.

In her bail petition, Jayalalithaa has dismissed the allegations against her as politically motivated.

She had appealed for "immediate bail on health grounds, which the Karnataka HC quashed on Tuesday.

Earlier, 66-year-old Jayalalithaa, three others including her long-time associate Sashikala Natarajan were convicted in the 18 year-old corruption case by a special court in Bangalore couple of weeks ago.

The case was filed in 1996 by Subramanian Swamy, now a BJP leader.

It was argued in the court that she had amassed property worth Rs. 66.65 crores - including 30 kg of gold, 12,000 saris and 2000 acres of land- despite not taking any salary as chief minister.

In reply, Jayalalithaa has said that she acquired her property and other assets through legal means, which was quashed by the special court.

In the meanwhile, joy and celebration mood turned sour in Jayalalithaa’s home state Tamil Nadu.

Her supporters thronged the streets in anticipation that their beloved leader will be freed from prison.

Early celebration started after news arrived that the prosecution did not oppose conditional bail plea.

But within minutes, joy turned to shock.

The whole atmosphere changed as pall of gloom descended in the city after Karnatala HC denied her bail application.
