Panaji, Mar 27 (IBNS/UNI) In a late night development ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, two of the three Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) MLAs merged into legislative unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.

An order issued by the State Legislative Assembly said, ''Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party has decided to merge in the Bharatiya Janata Party and a communication to that effect has been addressed by two members of Legislative Assembly namely Manohar Trimbak Ajgaonkar and Deepak Prabhu Pauskar, pusuant to a written communication dated 26th March 2019 and have agreed for such merger of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Legislative Party in Bharatiya Janata Party.''

''..the total strength of the legislators of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party is three members and as such these two members constitute two -third of the members.. Therefore, in view of the above, and taking into consideration sub-para (1) and (2) of para 4 of the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India, the Maharashtrawad Gomantak Party has merged into Bharatiya Janata Party,'' the order issued by Assembly Secretary N B Subhedar said.

Earlier, in a letter submitted to Goa Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo, the MLAs had said,''We, Manohar Ajgaonkar and Deepak Pauskar, have agreed to merge to merge with the BJP. In view of sub-clause (2) of clause 4 of the 10th schedule, and in view of the fact that we constitute two third of the members of the legislative party, such merger shall to deemed to have taken place.''

With the merger of the MLAs, number of MLAs of Bharatiya Janata Party in the Legislative Assembly has gone up to 14.

On March 19, 2019, Mr Ajgaonkar along with MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar were sworn in as ministers while Deepak Pauskar is Chairman of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).

Of late tension had been brewing up between the two coalition partners as Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party President Deepak Dhavalikar was insisting on contesting Shiroda by-election in spite of the fact that BJP had announced Subhash Shirodkar its candidate.

BJP Goa unit President Vinay Tendulkar was present at the state assembly complex at Porvorim when the two MLAs submitted the letter to Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
