Tiruvarur, Mar 27 (UNI): Six employees of a firecracker manufacturing unit were killed in an explosion at Mannai Nagar near Mannargudi in this district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
The factory, owned by one Singaram, was engaged in manufacture of crackers and aerial display fireworks meant for temple
festivals, functions, marriages and funerals.
The fire broke out due to friction in the fully-stocked warehouse leading to the explosion.
Charred bodies of the deceased were seen scattered around, even as a thick smoke billowed out of the factory, with repeated bursts of firecrackers resounding in the background, rescue workers said.
Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services department personnel, along with police and revenue officials rushed to the site.
The deceased were identified as Suresh, Babu, Singaravel, Mohan, Arivu and Veeraiyan.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the factory was allegedly functioning without proper permit for several years and did not follow any fire safety protocols.
Senior police officials inspected the spot and held an inquiry.
Police have registered a case under various sections of IPC and are searching the owner of the factory.
