Barabanki, Mar 27 (UNI) Five smugglers hailing from a gang peddling drugs from various areas, were arrested and morphine worth two-and-half crore rupees recovered from their possession in this district on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson here said that acting on a tip-off, the Satrikh police tried to intercept four miscreants riding on two motorcycles during checking near the Nanmau Nahar Pulia but the miscreants started firing.
In the retaliatory action by the police, all the four miscreants were nabbed.
425 grams of morphine worth around Rs 1 crore was recovered from their possession apart from four 'tamanchas' and several cartridges.
The accused have been identified as Barabanki resident Hafizullah alias Salman, Aalam, Zubair and Sitapur resident Mahmood-ul-Hasan.
The Jaidpur police also arrested drug peddler Rakesh Kumar after patrolling at the Tikra Chandauli canal road and 500 grams of fine morphine was recovered from his possession.
The estimated cost of the recovered morphine stands at around one-and-half crore rupees.
The peddler Rakesh Kumar is a resident of Fatehpur in the Pundari area of Kaithal (Haryana).
All accused have been sent to jail after being presented in the court.
