50 candidates in fray in second phase poll in Assam
Guwahati, Mar 29 (IBNS): Fifty candidates remained in fray for second phase polling in five parliamentary constituencies in Assam.
The last date for withdrawal nominations ended on Friday.
The office of Assam's chief electoral officer said 60 nominations had been filed for Karimganj, Silchar, Autonomous District (ST), Mangaldoi and Nowgong that will be polled in second phase on April 18.
During the scrutiny process, four nominations were rejected and six other candidates had withdrawn their nominations.
Prominent leaders in the fray during the second phase include sitting Congress MP Sushmita Dev in Silchar, sitting AIUDF MP Radheshyam Biswas and deputy speaker of Assam Assembly Kripanath Mallah in Karimganj, former Karbi militant leader Horen Sing Bey and sitting Congress MP Biren Sing Ingti in Autonomous District, Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita in Mangaldoi, former Assam minister Pradyut Bordoloi and BJP MLA Rupak Sarma in Nowgong.
A total of 68,36,496 voters of five constituencies of second phase will decide the fate of 50 candidates on April 18.
