Bengaluru, Apr 1 (UNI) The decision of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Rahul Gandhi to contest in the coming Lok Sabha elections from Waynad in Kerala has dampened the spirit of the rank and file in the party in Bidar Lok Sabha seat, in Karnataka.

According to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) sources, the State leaders had appealed to Rahul Gandhi to chose the Bidar Lok Sabha constituency, as it would give a boost to the prospects of the party candidates not only in Karnataka, but also bordering districts of Maharashtra and Telangana.

Hanumanth Bhusanoor, one of the prominent Congress leaders from Aland taluk in Kalaburagi district, which comes under the Bidar Lok Sabha segment for the Parliament elections told UNI that "We were looking forward to see that AICC Chief would chose to contest from Bidar seat".

Maintaining that the Bidar Lok Sabha seat, which was once represented by the former Chief Minister N Dharam Singh, would be the safe seat for the Congress, he said that "among the total number of seven Assembly seats, Congress has won five".

Basavaraj Hudagi, a native of Hudagi village in Humnabad taluk in Bidar district, also echoed the opinion of Mr Bhusanoor and said that "Bidar Lok Sabha seat is no more a bastion of BJP and it was proved in the 2018 Assembly elections and this time it is the safest bet for the Congress."

Meanwhile the KPCC President Dinesh Gundu Rao welcomed the party President's decision to contest for Waynad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala.

However he Tweeted that "though we are bit disappointed that he (Rahul) did not chose a constituency in Karnataka, I am sure that he would win with a massive majority from both Amethi and Waynad."
