Perambalur: Police arrests three in connection with seizure of Rs 1.99 cr
Perambalur, Apr 5 (UNI) After the Election Commission of India issued notification for phase two of Lok Sabha poll in Tamil Nadu, the Perambalur district police arrested three persons including a functionary of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) in connection with the seizure of Rs 1.99 crore suspected to be meant for bribing the voters.
Police said here on Friday that a Static Surveillance Team of Perambalur district, acting on specific tip off seized the cash in denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 2000, stashed inside the doors of a car at Perali toll plaza in Perambalur district on Tuesday night.
The car was proceeding to Kuzhumur in Ariyalur district. The car and Rs 1,99,91,500 cash were seized by the election officials later, and they thereafter referred to the Income Tax officials for further inquiry.
Though a case was registered against four persons, the Maruvathur police have arrested three persons namely ---J.Thangadurai (50), who is the VCK party’s Tiruchirapalli Lok Sabha incharge, his associate A.Thangam (42) and the car driver J.Moris Clive (30) under sections 171 (B) (bribery), 171(H) (illegal payments in connection with an election) read with sections including 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code, besides sections 102 and 41 (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The arrest was made after the trio was handed over to the Perambalur police by the Income Tax department, following a detailed inquiry regarding the money trial. The I.T sleuths conducted inquiries with the State-level office bearer attached to the traders’ wing of VCK party in Tiruchirapalli on Thursday, following which three persons were arrested.
Police suspect that the money was meant for distribution among voters in the Chidambaram (reserved) constituency, where VCK founder Thol.Thirumavalavan is contesting.
