Centre mulls to amend Consumer Protection Act

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IBNS): To provide more protection of consumers in terms of quality, quantity and safety, the Centre is mulling to amend the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Pubic Distribution Ram Villas Paswan on Friday admitted that as the act is of utmost importance to customers, the need to make it more effective than ever is required.

While inaugurating the National Consumer Convention being organized by Consumer Coordination Council on Friday, he said that all efforts will be made to ensure quick redressal of consumer grievances and strict enforcement of quality parameters for consumer products.

 
 “I seek the cooperation of all stakeholders such as voluntary consumer organizations, State Governments, consumer forums, and members of Consumer Coordination Council, to work together to empower the consumers of the country”, he urged.

Paswan said that the Government has proposed an authority to protect consumers against unfair trade practices which would also keep a close watch on various consumer services also. 
 
Expressing concern over pendency in various consumer redessal foura, he said, that there has been a growing feeling that consumers do not get quick redressal and framework available is lagging behind, hence amendments have to be made in the Act”. 
 
A number of provisions from online filing of complaints, speedy disposal of consumer disputes and concept of mediation process will be introduced with the amendment in the existing Act”, he asserted.
