Assam registers 78.23 percent voting in first phase

Guwahati, Apr 12 (IBNS): An estimated of 78.23 percent of the 76,03,458 voters in five Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam exercised their franchise during the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on Thursday.

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam Mukesh Sahu said that 78.23 percent voter turnout was recorded in the first phase Lok Sabha polls held in five Lok Sabha constituencies in the state on Thursday.

In the 2014 General Election, 78.74 percent voter turnout was recorded in these five Lok Sabha constituencies.

Among the five constituencies, Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency recorded the highest polling at 82.09 percent, followed by Tezpur at 79.15 percent, Jorhat at 77.49 percent, Dibrugarh at 77.26 percent and Lakhimpur at 74.81 percent.

In 2014, voter turnout was recorded in Kaliabor at 80.09 percent, Tezpur at 78.07 percent, Jorhat at 78.36 percent, Dibrugarh at 79.37 percent and Lakhimpur at 77.78 percent.

About 41 candidates including sitting BJP MP Rameswar Teli, Pradan Baruah, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Assam ministers Topon Kumar Gogoi, Pallab Lochan Das, former Union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, retired IAS officer MGVK Bhanu, former leader of All Assam Students Union (AASU) Moni Madhav Mahanta were in the fray in the first phase.

Voting for five constituencies in the state – Silchar, Karimganj, Autonomous District, Nowgong and Mangaldoi will be held on April 18 in the second phase.
