Rahul Gandhi visits Thirunelli Temple in Kerala's Wayanad

Wayanad, Apr 17 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday visited the Thirunelli Temple in Kerala's Wayanad, the second seat from where the opposition leader is contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

Gandhi, who was seen touring several temples before the Gujarat assembly elections, on Wednesday visited the place where ashes of his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were immersed.

The Congress president's decision to contest from Wayanad had upset Kerala's ruling party Left and earned a jibe from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Left and Congress usually maintain a cordial relationship at the national level.

Stating his reason to fight from Kerala, Rahul had said he wanted to give a message to south India which he feels was overlooked by the BJP government.

After filing his nomination from Wayanad, the Congress supremo had said he won't speak a word against the CPI-M during his campaigning.

Gandhi has also filed his nomination from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, where the Congress chief won for three consecutive terms in 2004, 2009 and 2014.

BJP candidate from Amethi Smriti Irani had said Gandhi betrayed the people of his constituency and fled to Wayanad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP's main poll campaigner, had stirred a row saying Gandhi went to Wayanad as it is a Muslim-dominated seat.
