Chennai, Apr 17 (UNI) The Madras High Court on Wednesday dismissedpleas against the Election Commission's decision to rescind the polls to Vellore Lok Sabha seat following the seizure of money meant for distribution to the voters.

Upholding the EC's decision to cancel the polls, a Division Bench comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad dismissed thepleas moved by NJP founder A C Shanmugam, contesting under the ruling AIADMK's Two Leaves symbol, and Independent candidate K Sugumar.

Taking up the urgent hearing on the eve of scheduled polling, the Bench dismissed the pleas against the EC order, which cancelled the polls after getting the Presidential nod.

''The EC, which has the power to issue notification for holding elections, also has the power for recommending cancellation if it has arrived at the conclusion that it is necessary to halt the election," the Bench observed.

The election was cancelled after IT officials conducted raids and seized money from the premises of DMK candidate Kathir Anand, son of DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan, and the latter's close associate.
