Independent candidates raise questions about Rahul Gandhi's citizenship, educational qualification; decision on Apr 22
Amethi, Apr 20 (UNI): Four independent candidates from Amethi Lok Sabha seat have challenged the nomination papers of Congress president Rahul Gandhi over his education qualification and nationality.
Independent candidate Dhrublal along with Afzal, Suresh Chandra and Suresh Kumar raised the issue on Saturday during scrutiny of nomination papers by the officials on Saturday.
They demanded that the nomination papers of Rahul Gandhi should be rejected.
Returning Officer (RO) Dr Ram Manohar Mishra said that the counsel Rahul Kaushik, representing the Congress president sought time to reply.
Dr Mishra later issued an order saying that the matter would be heard at 1030 hours on April 22.
Dhrublal and others said during the scrutiny raised the issue of the nationality and education qualification of Rahul Gandhi and even submitted the required documents.
But Congress has opposed the move and claimed that how can anyone question the nationality of Gandhi family.
"Everyone in the country knows about the history of Gandhi family during freedom movement . Now question about the nationality of Rahul Gandhi , shows the narrow mentality of some people," said district congress president Yogendra Mishra here while reacting on the issue.
Congress spokesperson Anil Singh alleged that on order to cover up the disprecency of the nominations of Union minister Smriti Irani.
He in turn demanded probe into the education record of BJP candidate Smriti Irani, who had earlier claimed to be graduate and now suddenly becomes 12th pass.
On Friday , Allahabad High Court had asked a petitioner to approach the central government over challenging the citizenship of Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
The court directed the central government to consider and quickly address the petitioners grievance if so raised in accordance with the law.
The bench of justice D K Arora and Manish Mathur passed the order on a petition by one R K Singh who charged that Rahul Gandhi while filing income tax return in Britain where he claimed to holder British citizenship.
Singh said that under article 19 of the Constitution and section 9 of Indian citizenship Act, Rahul Gandhi stands disqualified as a Indian citizen and his Lok Sabha membership should be set aside.
