PM Modi files nomination from Varanasi amid display of NDA strength
Varanasi, Apr 26 (IBNS): At a time the Congress is receiving brutal attacks from Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi displayed the strength of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) while filing his nomination from Varanasi constituency of the same state on Friday.
A day after holding a mega roadshow in the city, the Prime Minister was accompanied by top BJP leaders- Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Yogi Adityanath- as Modi went to file his nomination to contest the Lok Sabha polls.
Showcasing the unity of NDA ahead of the fourth phase of polls, Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) chief Nitish Kumar, former Punjab Chief Minister and Siromani Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray were present.
Before getting into his car to leave for poll rallies, Modi urged voters to cast their votes peacefully to strengthen democracy, government and the country.
"I urge all voters to cast their votes peacefully like a celebration of democracy. They should cast votes to strengthen democracy, government and the country," Modi, who is leading the BJP's poll campaign, said after thanking the people of Varanasi.
Modi contesting away from home
Despite hailing from Gujarat, Narendra Modi has decided to contest the polls from Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, the seat which earned him a massive victory in the 2014 General Elections.
Five years ago, Modi, who was then BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate, had contested and won from two seats- Vadodara and Varanasi- but kept the Uttar Pradesh seat with him.
SP-BSP ignore Congress
Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which are headed by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati respectively, have left out Congress from their grand alliance to defeat the BJP in the 2019 General Elections, which will decide whether a non-Congress government will be in power for two straight terms.
In recent tweets as well, Mayawati has hit out at Congress and equated the grand old party with BJP.
No Priyanka Gandhi Vadra against Modi
Though the Congress raised speculations that it might bring party's eastern Uttar Pradesh general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra up against Modi it later named Ajay Rai as its candidate in Varanasi.
In 2014, Rai had contested against Modi but suffered a huge setback in terms of vote percentage.
Road to Delhi is through UP
Uttar Pradesh has been a key state in the General Elections as it provides 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
In the 2014 General Elections, the BJP and its allies bagged 73 seats to pave the way for Modi's first Prime Ministerial term.
Seven-phase polls in India
India is going through a long seven-phase elections with three of them already completed.
Varanasi, which is the topic of the moment, will go to polls on May 19. The poll results will be declared on May 23.
