Srinagar, May 3 (UNI) A fierce encounter ensued between militants and security forces during a Cordon and Search Operation in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Friday, a police spokesman said.

Shopian along with Pulwama are going to polls in the third and final phase of voting in Anantnag Parliamentary constituency on May 6. First two phases in the constituency in Anantnag and Kulgam were held last month.

The spokesman said troops of Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Imamsahib Shopian, following a tip-off about the presence of militants in the wee hours today.

However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there opened fire, he said adding troops also returned the fire ensuing in an encounter. He said further details are awaited.

Official sources said two to three militants are reportedly trapped in the area. Additional security forces have been deployed in the nearby areas to prevent any demonstration.

Meanwhile, mobile internet has been snapped in the area to prevent spread of rumours.
