Bahraich, May 8 (UNI) A woman and her daughter were burnt to death after a gas cylinder exploded in the Murtiha Kotwali area, close to the Nepal border in this district of Uttar Pradesh, police sources said on Wednesday.

Seventeen homes in the village were also set ablaze when the fire spread to other areas.

According to the police spokesperson, food was being prepared for wedding of one Lakshman Prasad's daughter's in the Salarpur village of the Murtiha police station area on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the cylinder caught fire due to gas leakage at around 1530 hrs. Before the fire could be controlled, the cylinder burst and the inferno spread to the wedding 'pandal.'

The spokesperson said that Munni Devi (40), wife of one Suresh, and her daughter Karishma (12) were critically burnt in the incident and the duo succumbed to their injuries before they could be taken to the hospital.

The inferno further spread due to strong winds, resulting in 17 other homes catching fire and getting burnt, subsequently.

Upon receiving information, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) camp Murtiha in-charge Abhishek Kumar reached the spot and started putting out the fire along with other jawans.

A fire brigade also reached the spot from Nepal's Gulriha and after several efforts, the fire brigade personnel were able to put out the blaze.
