Puducherry, May 20 (UNI) The youth wing volunteers of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday held a demonstration at Avvai thidal Saram here.
The agitation was to condemn Makkal Neethi Mayyam (MNM) president actor Kamal Hassan for his statement that the first extremist in independent India was a Hindu.
The Madras High Court on Monday granted an anticipatory bail to actor-turned politician Kamal Haasan who had courted a controversy by calling Nathuram Godse as the "first Hindu terrorist", media reports said.
At least two complaints were filed against Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Haasan, who was accused of "promoting enmity between different groups".
Addressing a rally in Tamil Nadu's Aravakurichi assembly constituency where bypolls was held on Sunday, Haasan said as quoted by News 18, "I am not saying this because many Muslims are here. I'm saying this in front of Gandhi's statue. The first terrorist post India's independence is a Hindu. His name is Nathuram Godse."
Reacting sharply to Haasan's comment, Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Tamilisai Soundararajan had tweeted, "Actor Kamalahasan recalling Gandhi’s assassination now and calling it Hindu terrorism is condemnable.Standing amidst minorities in TN by-election campaign he is lighting a dangerous fire to gain votes by minority appeasement.kamal didn’t opine on recent Srilanka bomb blast why?"
On Jan 30, 1948, Hindu Mahasabha member and past Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Nathuram Godse had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.
