Jammu and Kashmir: Restrictions lifted in down town, SeK in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 22 (UNI) Curfew like restrictions imposed in down town and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK), Srinagar to prevent any demonstration on the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone were lifted on Wednesday.

Curfew like restrictions imposed were imposed on Tuesday in down town and SeK.


Mirwaiz, father of chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on this day in 1990 in his Nigeen house. Founder of Peoples Conference (PC), a constituent of separatist HC, Abdul Gani Lone was killed in 2002 gunmen when he was about to leave for home after paying tributes to Mirwaiz at Eidgh in the down town on this day.


Police said Restrictions under Section 144 CRPF were imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of five police stations of Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and M R Gunj have been lifted. There were no restrictions in any part of the city on Wednesday, police added.


All gates of historic Jamia Masjid in down town, which were closed to prevent people from assembling there yesterday are open today.


Security forces and state police personnel deployed in the Jamia Market and around the historic worship place yesterday have been withdrawn and shops reopened in the market.


Mirwaiz Omar had announced to lead a procession on Tuesday from Jamia Masjid to Eidgah martyrs grave yard, where Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq is laid to rest.


All roads leading to the Masjid which had been closed with barbed wire at Nowhatta, Gojwara, Naqashband Sahib and Rangar were opened today.


Traffic was also plying normally on Nallahmar road passing through down town and SeK after barbed wire and road blocks were removed by the security forces.
