Srinagar, May 31(IBNS/UNI): An encounter is currently going on between security forces and suspected terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian area on Friday.

Security forces have cordoned off the area.

An encounter ensued between militants and security forces during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Friday, official sources told UNI news agency.

They said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at village Draggad Sugan, Shopian in the wee hours of Friday following a tip-off about the presence of militants.

However, after sealing all exit points, security forces started conducting searches.

When troops were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened fire, they said, adding that security forces also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter.

The operation was going on when the reports last came in. Additional security forces and police personnel were deployed in the nearby areas to prevent any demonstration, the sources added.
