Use of EVMs in Lok Sabha polls questioned by PIL

New Delhi, Jun 13 (UNI:) A PIL was filed before the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India to conduct fresh Lok Sabha polls using ballot papers.

Lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma, in his Public Interest Litigation, averred that the ECI has no power to conduct polls with EVMs.

Mr Sharma, known for frequently filing PILs, asserted that the EC has no power under the Representation of the People Act, to conduct polls with the Electronic Voting Machines.

"There is no power conferred or assigned to the ECI to conduct elections with the EVMs, it can conduct polls only through ballot papers," Mr Sharma contended adding that he will mention his petition on Friday before the vacation bench for an urgent hearing.
