Police arrest prime accused of Barpeta incident after video shows Muslim men forced to say ‘Jai Shree Ram’
Guwahati, Jun 23 (IBNS): The police have arrested the prime accused in the case of alleged physically assaulting a group of Muslim men in Assam’s Barpeta district and forced them to say ‘Jai Shree Ram’, ‘Pakistan Murdabad’, ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ slogans.
The arrested person is identified as Debojit Deka, a member of little-known right wing organization Sri Ram Sena.
According to the reports, the Barpeta police and Guwahati city police have arrested Debojit Deka from Guwahati.
Barpeta police have registered a case at Barpeta police station after several organizations lodged FIR following the incident.
On June 18 night, some members of the right-wing organisation had stopped an auto-rickshaw at Barpeta road where some Muslim labourers were travelling.
The right-wing group had forced to say them ‘Jai Shree Ram’, ‘Pakistan Murdabad’, ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ slogans.
The members of the right-wing organisation had also allegedly physically assaulted the Muslim men.
The entire incident’s video was shot in mobile and it went viral on social media.
Following the incident, two FIRs were lodged by the All Assam Minority Students'' Union (AAMSU), North-East Minorities Students' Union (NEMSU) and Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti to Barpeta police.
“On June 19, we had received information that Abdul Malek had lodged a complaint as some people had assaulted a group of men, while they were travelling in an auto-rickshaw. They were also forced to chant some slogans. We have started an investigation after receiving the complaint. The complainer had also given us a video. A case has been registered in connection with the incident. Some other organizations had also submitted memorandum and complaint. Our investigation is going on. We have already arrested one person in connection with the incident,” Dr Robin Kumar, Barpeta district SP said.
