West Bengal: Muslim teacher alleges he was pushed off a train for not chanting 'Jai Shree Ram'

Kolkata, June 25 (IBNS): While a young Muslim man succumbed to a mob assault in Jharkhand when he was forced to utter "Jai Shree Ram" as witnessed in a viral video, a   madrassa teacher in West Bengal has alleged that he was beaten up and pushed off a moving train by a group of men for not chanting 'Jai Shree Ram'. Police said they are investigating the charge, media reports said.

The man said the incident occurred on Thursday last while he was travelling from Canning in South 24 Parganas district to Hooghly.

Hafeez Mohd Sahrukh Haldar, who the police said escaped with minor injuries, was quoted as saying by The Indian Express, “I was travelling to Hooghly when a group of people were chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ inside the compartment. They asked me to chant the same. When I refused, they started to beat me, nobody came to my rescue. The incident took place while the train was between Dhakuria and Park Circus stations. They pushed me off the train at Park Circus station. Some locals helped me.”

The police said an investigation has been initiated in the incident.

A railway police official told the newspaper: “He had minor injuries and was taken to Chittaranjan Hospital. Proper treatment was provided to him. It seems that he was assaulted during the journey due to boarding and deboarding issues. There were two to three people who sustained minor injuries. Investigation is on and no one has been arrested.”

The 'Jai Shree Ram' chant has now become a part of the sloganeering by the BJP workers and followers.

Jai Shree Ram chant in LS:

Amid 'Jai Shree Ram ' chants, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi last Tuesday took oath in the Parliament.

The chants could be heard as Owaisi was walking down the floor of the Parliament to take his oath.

However, Owaisi, while taking his oath, was quick in reacting to the situation and said, "Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Takbeer Allahu Akbar, Jai Hind."

"It is good that they remember such things when they see me, I hope they will also remember the constitution and deaths of children in Muzaffarpur," Owaisi was quoted as saying by India Today.

Mamata Banerjee and Jai Shree Ram:

After videos of West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee chasing Jai Shree Ram chanters went viral, she stated on social media that she had no problems with any political slogan, but she could not support the way in which the BJP was using the religious slogan "Jai Shree Ram"  mixing religion with politics.

Videos of the CM getting rattled by BJP supporters chanting "Jai Shri Ram" at her convoy had gone viral over the past several days.
