Modi visits Siachen Glacier to celebrate Diwali with soldiers

New Delhi/ Srinagar, Oct 23 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday began a hectic day with his visit to the Siachen Glacier in Jammu and Kashmir, the world's highest battlefield, where he aimed to "stand shoulder to shoulder with" soldiers on the occasion of Diwali.

Ahead of beginning his journey, Modi posted on Twitter: "Friends, I am leaving for Siachen Glacier. Its my good fortune that I will be able to spend time with our brave soldiers on this special day."

In a series tweets, Modi paid tributes to the soldiers posting: "Everyone is aware of the extreme conditions at Siachen. Overcoming every challenge our soldiers stand firm, protecting our Motherland."

"Be it the altitude or bitter cold, nothing deters our soldiers. They stand there, serving our Nation. They make us truly proud," the PM wrote.

"Am going to Siachen with a message from each and every Indian to our soldiers- that we stand shoulder to shoulder with you!,"he said.

Later in the afternoon, Modi will visit Srinagar to celebrate Diwali with flood effected families.

"After the Siachen visit I will continue with my scheduled visit to Srinagar to spend time with those affected due to the recent floods," Modi tweeted.

He will meet flood effected families at the Raj Bhavan in Srinagar.

Reports said that he will meet political parties' heads, business leaders and hoteliers as well.

Sources told IBNS that state Governor NN Vohra will serve lunch at Raj Bahwan.

The PM will also hold a meeting with army officials and civil admin who take part in flood rescue operation last month.

Modi is also expected to announce a special relief package for the Kashmiri people.

Ahead of the PM's visit, security have been put on high alert to thwart any type of militant activity .

Meanwhile, security tightened across the valley as Sepratists called for a strike on Thursday.
