New Delhi, July 10 (UNI): The Centre on Wednesday banned the organisation called Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) being run by some fringe Sikh groups operating from the US, Britain and Canada.

The SFJ pushes for Sikh Referendum 2020 as part of its separatist agenda.

The government move comes after the Union Cabinet on Wednesday declared "Sikhs for Justice (SFJ)" as an unlawful association under provision 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967, a senior government official said.

“The SFJ has been indulging in activities which are prejudicial to the internal security of India and public order, and also have the potential of disrupting peace, integrity of the country," the government said in the Gazette notification of India on July 10.

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh welcomed the Centre’s move and described it as the first step towards protecting the nation from the anti-India and secessionist plans and designs of the Pakistan's ISI-backed organisations.

Many Sikh organisations in the country have also welcome the government's decision.
