Battlefield Birbhum: At least three killed, two injured in political clash

Kolkata, Oct 28 (IBNS): An uneasy calm prevailed in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, a day after violent clashes broke out between suspected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists and ruling Trinamool Congress supporters that killed at least three villagers and left two others severely injured.

The incident took place at Makra village under Panrui police station in the district on Monday as a large number of miscreants reportedly gathered around the village, hurled bombs, fired gunshots, randomly burnt and ransacked houses.

“So far three people have been killed in the clash and two others are seriously injured,” Birbhum police superintendent Alok Rajouria said.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident. Rapid Action Force (RAF) had already been deployed in the area.

A strong contingent of police personnel, under district additional superintendent of police Ananda Roy, also visited the spot.

The violence came to fore only days after policemen were injured after bombs were hurled at Chowmondala village, located about 10-km far from Makra, where the incident occurred.

Television channels also showed footage where armed miscreants ran through fields and bullet-ridden people lying in the pool of blood.  Several houses were ransacked and set ablaze during the attack.

Women and girls also narrated their ordeal of how they were beaten up and heckled when the attackers entered their village.
