Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passes away

New Delhi, Aug 6 (IBNS); Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who had earned accolades from Indians both within the nation and abroad for her prompt responses to people in distress as the country's foreign minister, passed away on Tuesday, a condolence tweet by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed.

According to reports, she died due to a massive heart attack. She was 67.

Prime Minister Narnedra Modi confirmed the news tweeting "a glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end."

"India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people," he posted.

Following the attack, Sushma Swaraj was admitted to the AIIMS in New Delhi.

She had served as the External Affairs Minister of the nation in the first term of PM Narendra Modi government.

Her last tweet:

In her last tweet earlier in the day, Sushma had congratulated the Prime Minister for move to revoke Article 370.

"@narendramodi ji - Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," she tweeted.

Sushma Swaraj did not contest the Lok Sabha polls this time owing to ill health.

S Jaishankar stepped into her shoes to serve as the External Affairs Minister of the country.

 

The Congress party mourned her death and tweeted: " We are saddened to hear about the untimely demise of Smt Sushma Swaraj. Our condolences to her family and loved ones. "
