Every citizen should be allowed to enter Jammu and Kashmir: Supreme Court
New Delhi: Days after the Jammu and Kashmir administration disallowed a battery of opposition leaders to enter the valley, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said every citizen must have an access to the northern part of the country.
The top court has also allowed CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury to visit Jammu and Kashmir and meet his party colleague Yousuf Tarigami. Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said as quoted by Times Now, "We will permit you to go, you are the general secretary of a party. Don't go for anything else."
Jamia Milia Islamia student Mohd Aleem Syed has been allowed to visit his family in Anantnag.
Earlier, Yechury and CPI leader D Raja were sent back from the Srinagar Airport when they had attempted to visit Jammu and Kashmir.
Last week, opposition leaders including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were not allowed to step outside the Srinagar Airport.
The leaders were denied an entry to the newly-formed Union Territory after the Centre scrapped Articles 370 and 35A to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
