Assam: 73-year-old doctor beaten to death by tea garden workers
Guwahati, Sept 1 (IBNS): A 73-year-old doctor, who was attacked by tea workers of a tea estate in Assam’s Jorhat district, died, officials said on Sunday.
The incident took place at Teok tea estate on Saturday evening.
The workers of the tea estate had beaten up the doctor named Dr Deven Dutta, a senior resident doctor, blamed his for the death of a temporary worker of the tea estate.
According to the reports, 33-year-old Sukra Majhi – a temporary worker of Teok tea estate was taken to the tea garden hospital in a critical condition.
A nurse of the hospital administered saline but worker died.
Following the incident, the angry workers of the tea estate gheraod the hospital and attacked the doctor when he arrived.
The angry mob thrashed him and locked in a room of the hospital.
Later, local police and CRPF personnel had rescued the injured doctor and rushed to Jorhat Medical College hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
Dr Deven Dutta had retired several years ago and was serving on extension at the tea estate.
Jorhat district Superintendent of Police Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant said that, police has already initiated an inquiry and will take action against the culprits.
“The incident was happened at Teok tea estate where the doctor named Dr Deven Dutta was attacked by some relatives of a patient. The injured doctor was rushed to Jorhat Medical College hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. We have started investigation and will take action against the culprits as per law,” the police official said.
Following the incident, the junior and senior doctors of Jorhat Medical College hospital held a candle light protest and demanded the government to take stern action against the culprits.
