Kolkata, Sept 2 (UNI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has convened a meeting on Tuesday at Nabanna to discuss rehabilitation of 375 displaced people, who had to be evacuated after their houses caved-in under the impact of East-West Metro tunnel construction in central Kolkata.

Banerjee, who visited the affected areas of Hidadram Banerjee Lane, Durga Pituri Lane and Sakra Para in Bow Bazar area this afternoon, told the affected people that the government along with all the stakeholders would do everything to ensure proper rehabilitation.

Lauding the Kolkata Metro Railway administration for the speedy and safe evacuation of the people on time, Banerjee said, "Thank God, no one was injured in the disaster that happened on Saturday and Sunday."

Metro Railway promptly evacuated all the affected people to various lodges and hotels and assured rebuilding and repairing of the affected houses.

The houses on three contiguous localities began tilting, cracking or nearly collapsed while the underground work for the East-West Metro tunnel towards Sealdah from Dalhousie was in progress, sources said.

Sources said that water gushed inside the underground tunnel while being dug, causing damage to the upper soil. As a result, the houses on the surface began to crack and crumble.

Metro Railway has suspended the project work at the site until further order.

Banerjee said there would be no politics in the disaster.

The chief minister said that she has invited all the stakeholders, Metro Railway, Police and local administration to the meeting to be held at Nabanna, the state secretariat from 3 pm onward.
