PM Modi condoles Ram Jethmalani's demise

New Delhi, Sept 8 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condoled the passing away of veteran lawyer Ram Jethmalani.

In his message, he noted: "In the passing away of Shri Ram Jethmalani Ji, India has lost an exceptional lawyer and iconic public figure who made rich contributions both in the Court and Parliament. He was witty, courageous and never shied away from boldly expressing himself on any subject."

Modi said even after his death the veteran lawyer's pioneering work will be always remembered.

"I consider myself fortunate to have got numerous opportunities to interact with Shri Ram Jethmalani Ji. In these sad moments, my condolences to his family, friends and many admirers. He may not be here but his pioneering work will live on! Om Shanti," the PM posted.

According to media reports, he was not keeping well for the last few months and passed away at his residence on Sunday morning.

He handled a number of high-profile cases and had defended several top politicians including LK Advani, Lalu Prasad Yadav, J Jayalalithaaa and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

He was a six-time Rajya Sabha member and served as a Union Minister in the United Front and the BJP-led NDA governments.

He served as Law Minister of India and also as Minister of Urban Development during the prime ministership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee against whom he later contested election in the general elections of 2004 from Lucknow constituency.

Several politicians mourned his death and took it to Twitter to express their feelings.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Jethmalani's home too to pay his last respects to the former minister and later tweeted: "Ram Jethmalani ji's passing away is a irreparable loss to the entire legal community. He will always be remebered for his vast knowledge on legal affairs. My condolences to the bereaved family. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti."

Paying his tribute, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "Extremely saddened at the passing away of legendary lawyer Ram Jethmalani ji. An institution in himself, he shaped criminal law in post-independence India. His void would never be filled and his name will be written in golden words in legal history. RIP Ram sir."

Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad posted: "Deeply condole the passing away of the veteran lawyer and former Law Minister Ram Jethmalani. His brilliance, eloquence, powerful advocacy and sound understanding of law will remain a worthy example in legal profession. My profound condolences."
