Centre commits to bring Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, protect rights of indigenous people of NE: Amit Shah

Guwahati, Sept 9 (IBNS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that the centre will not touch the Article 371 of the constitution which gives special status to the North-Eastern states or allow any legislation that overlaps the tribal laws, local acts and inner line permit here.

Addressing the 4th Conclave of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) held in Guwahati, Shah said that, there is no link between Article 370 and 371.

“I want to assure that, the centre will not touch Article 371,” Shah said.

Hinting about the centre’s plan to bring the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), the Union Home Minister said that, centre’s stand for bringing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is absolutely clear, but the rights of the indigenous people of the region will also be protected.

“I would like to state that, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will not interfere with tribal laws, indigenous people’s rights that protect the identity and culture of the region. We have already fixed December 31, 2014 and will not grant citizenship to those enter after the cut-off date,” Shah said.

Over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue, Shah said that illegal migrants will not be allowed t stay Assam or other parts of the country.
