Mamata Banerjee to hold protest rally against NRC today

Kolkata, Sept 12 (UNI): West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will walk in a protest rally on Thursday against National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, which has excluded 19 lakh people.

The rally will begin at Sinthi More and end at Shyambazar.

Apart from Mamata, elected representatives and party functionaries of the Trinamool will be present in the rally.

Last week, the West Bengal Assembly had passed a resolution against implementation of NRC in the State.

Mamata had always maintained, "NRC is nothing but political vendetta by the BJP-led government at the Centre."

After the final draft of NRC in Assam was published, she had tweeted: “The NRC fiasco has exposed all those who tried to take political mileage out of it. They have a lot to answer to the nation. This is what happens when an act is guided by an ulterior motive rather than the good of the society and the larger interest of the nation.”

She added, “My heart goes out to all those, especially the large number of Bengali speaking brothers and sisters, who are made to suffer because of this botched-up process.”

Earlier too, the Trinamool Congress organised rallies and street corner meetings at various places in the State, as part of “mass protests” against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the “divisive” politics of the BJP. These protests were carried out on September 7 and 8.

Carrying posters and placards in several districts, the Trinamool supporters shouted slogans against the BJP-led government and demanded immediate repeal of the NRC in Assam.

“Protest rallies were organised in various parts of the state yesterday and today. Our party workers have vowed not to allow NRC in Bengal. Locals, too, joined in,” Trinamool secretary general Partha Chatterjee said.

“Party cadres have vowed that they can sacrifice their lives but would never allow division of Bengal,” senior party leader and state minister Tapan Dasgupta said.
