Pregnant Muslim woman and two sisters stripped, tortured inside Assam police station
Guwahati, Sep 17 (IBNS): In a horrific incident, a pregnant Muslim woman and her two sisters were allegedly stripped and tortured inside a police station in Assam’s Darrang district.
The incident happened on Sept 8 but it only surfaced on Tuesday.
According to the reports, the Darrang district police had picked up three sisters – Minuwara Begum, Sanuwara and Rumela from Sixmile area in Guwahati on Sept 8 night in connection with a kidnapping case and they were taken to Burha police outpost.
In a complaint filed with the Darrang district Superintendent of Police on Sept 10, Minuwara Begum alleged that she and her two other sisters were picked up by a police team from their residences led by the Officer-in-Charge of Burha police outpost, Mahendra Sarma on Sept 8 night.
The complaint stated that – they were taken to Burha police outpost, where the Officer-in-Charge of Burha police outpost and a lady constable physically tortured them whole night. They were also stripped naked.
“We were brutally beaten up and the police officer touched our private parts. The police officer also threatened us by showing pistol to not file any complaint against him,” said in the complainant.
The victim woman had filed a complaint with the Darrang district Superintendent of Police on Sept 10, but their case was not registered.
After the alleged torture, the pregnant woman was admitted at the hospital where her pregnancy was terminated.
Meanwhile, Darrang district Superintendent of Police (SP) Amrit Bhuyan said that he has already initiated a probe into the incident and asked a DSP to probe it.
“We have received a complaint on Sept 11 that, she was tortured when she was at Burha police outpost. I already directed our DSP to make an inquiry into the incident. If we found that police used additional forces then we will register a criminal case. We will also look in the medical report,” Amrit Bhuyan said.
On the other hand, the Assam State Commission for Women has lodged a case suo moto into the incident.
Assam State Commission for Women Chairperson Chikimiki Talukdar said that commission has asked to register a suo moto case.
On the other hand, Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia has also directed the Darrang SP to probe into the incident.
