Assam police recover huge cache of arms and ammunition

Guwahati, Sep 24 (IBNS): Security forces have recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition in Assam's Chirang district.

Based on a specific information, a joint  operation was carried out by Chirang district police, along with 5th Garhwal  Rifles of Indian Army and 54 Bn SSB, in the  general area of Gabrukhunda inside  Panbari  Reserve  Forest, about 18 km  north from  Panbari police station on Tuesday.

A top official of Chirang district police said from 5.30 am today onwards,  rigorous search has been carried out.  Based on the lead given by source & Army  tracker dog,  digging was done at multiple places. 

"During digging, at one place,  8 packets  containing some suspected items packed  in plastic material have been recovered.  After unpacking in presence of independent witnesses, huge cache of arms and ammunition have been recovered," the police official said.

Security forces recovered 9 factory made rifle, 11 country made  rifle, 56 rounds 7.62  AK series ammunition, 10 rounds 5.56 ammunition, 21 rounds 7.62  sniper ammunition, 10 rounds 7.62 Pika  ammunition, 29 7.62 CTN, one 333 Nitro, one round  M 20  ammunition,  five rounds country made  ammunition, 83 empty  cartridges,  15 rounds 12 bore empty  cartridges, three 7.62 pistol magazines,    one .22  pistol magazine,  17 kg explosives (PEK), two HYT hand  held  Radio Sets  (made  in  China) with  additional  battery,  02 one 12 Volt battery, 93 feet  wire, 10 numbers suspected  Lead/Iron  balls and one extra barrel.

Police suspected that, the recovered arms and ammunition were belonging to insurgent group.
