Union Home Ministry decides to grant special dispensation to 9 Sikh prisoners
New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) In a humanitarian gesture, the Union Home Ministry on Saturday decided to grant special dispensation to nine Sikh prisoners across the country on the occasion of 550 birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.
In one case, the decision has been taken to commute the death sentence to life imprisonment, and in remaining eight cases, decision has been taken for premature release of prisoners serving life sentences and other sentences, through special remission, a Union home ministry said in a statement.
These individuals were convicted by various courts across the country for the offences committed by them during the militancy period in Punjab.
The State Governments and Union Territories concerned have been sent a communication from the Union Home Ministry for release of these Sikh prisoners.
This decision has been taken as a token of goodwill in response to the long pending demands of release of Sikh prisoners articulated by various sections of the Sikh community.
