Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid a visit to Nobel laureate economist Abhijit Banerjee's mother Nirmala Banerjee's residence here on Wednesday.

In an informal meeting, Mamata sat with the family members of Abhijit Banerjee, who won the Nobel Prize on Monday, and interacted with them.

State minister Indranil Sen also sang songs amid the light-mood discussion which took place at the Ballygunge Circular Road flat.

Interacting with media, the Chief Minister said, "I came here because mother is the main pillar of every person's life."

Mamata said she won't visit Abhijit Banerjee when he will come to Kolkata on Oct 23 to give him and his family some private space. However, the Chief Minister said she will meet him when Abhijit Banerjee will come to the city later.

Abhijit Banerjee, who is an American citizen now but is a Mumbai-born Indian, became the third Bengali to win a Nobel Prize and this time in Economics “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.

Along with Abhijit Banerjee, his wife Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer have also been awarded the Nobel in the same category.
