Congress leader arrested for speaking against Mamata govt on YouTube gets bail
Purulia/IBNS: Congress leader and spokesperson Sanmoy Banerjee, who was arrested for posting content on social media against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the rule of her party on his YouTube Channel, has been given bail by a district court in West Bengal on Sunday.
In a statement, West Bengal Congress president Soumen Mitra said,"Truth has triumphed! The Purulia district court has accepted the bail plea of Congress spokesperson Sanmoy Banerjee. We had faith in law, right from the beginning."
"Congress will fight against the Trinamool goons who attacked Sanmoy in collusion with the police,"he went on to say.
"The Left parties have pledged their support in our fight against Trinamool's attempt to murder democracy in the state, and we will take to the streets together against the ruling party in the coming day," Mitra added.
Sanmoy Banerjee was arrested on the Thursday last from Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district and taken to Purulia based on a cybercrime complaint lodged in Purulia by a Trinamool Youth Congress worker in September under Section 66 of the IT Act accusing him of "forgery, forgery with the purpose of harming the reputation, defamation and statements leading to public mischief.
"Sanmoy Banerjee's detention is unconstitutional and undemocratic and unmasks Mamata Banerjee who keeps harping on freedom of expression and speech in the country. He is being punished for speaking true words," Mitra had told IBNS.
On his YouTube Channel Banglar Barta, Sanmoy Banerjee(58) speaks on political matters, mostly against the TMC rule in the state. The channel has more than 83,000 subscribers.
