High alert sounds across Nagaland as deadline for Naga peace talks settlement nears

Guwahati/IBNS: As the Oct 31 deadline for the final settlement of the over two-decade old Naga peace talks is nearing, high security measures have been strengthened in Nagaland and the Nagaland government directed all district police, security agencies to take all preventive measures to tackle any untoward situation.

Fearing about the fallout of the ongoing peace talks between NSCN-IM and the centre, various NSCN-IM leaders, self styled Commanding officers of the battalions, brigades of the outfit have been asked to safeguard the arms and ammunition available with them and shift the arms, ammunition to safety places.

A top official of Nagaland government said that, the top leaders of the outfit have feared about fallout of the ongoing peace talks.

The cadres of the Naga outfit have also mobilized in a group of 10-20 cadres from their camps to different parts of the state

Following the situation, the Nagaland police have directed all districts Superintendent of Police (SP) to take necessary precautionary measures to tackle any situation.

In a WT message on Oct 22, the Nagaland police headquarter said that, “According to an input, several top Echelons of NSCN-IM including Q Tuccu (self styled president) feels that outcome of the ongoing peace talks between GoI-NSCN-IM may not be according to the demands of the outfits.

Fearing the fallout, various self styled Commanding officers of battalions, brigades of NSCN-IM especially JC BN (Kiphire) and Yenbemo brigade (Tuensang) have been asked to safeguard the arms and ammunition available with them and shift them to the nearby villages of these camps.”

The WT message (PHQ(CON-I)10/2019/2020) also said that, “Besides, inputs also indicate shifting of weapons housed with senior leadership residing in Dimapur. Separately, inputs further suggest that on directives of top Echeions of NSCN-IM outfit has also started mobilizing their cadres in a group of 10-20 cadres at strategic in Dimapur, Zunheboto and other areas of Nagaland.”

The top official further said that, the state government has taken all preventive measures to maintain law and order.

It is to be mentioned that, the crucial meeting to end the deadlock the Naga peace talks between the NSCN-IM and the centre which was held in New Delhi on Thursday was inconclusive.

The centre had again rejected the NSCN-IM’s demand of separate flag and separate constitution.

A 15-member delegation team of the Naga outfit led by its General Secretary Th. Muivah had attended the crucial meeting in New Delhi in presence of Nagaland governor and centre appointed interlocutor RN Ravi and other top officials of the Union Home Ministry.

During the three-hour long meeting the NSCN-IM team had again raised their separate flag and separate constitution demand, but the centre rejected it.

A top government official said that, another meeting with the NSCN-IM will be held on Oct 28.
