Kolkata/UNI: A seven-member delegation representing the Bengal Intellectual Society led by its president Professor Radharaman Chakraborty today called on governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and submitted a memorandum raising two specific incidents that point towards the critical compromise of human rights and the Rule of Law in the state.

The delegation, including general secretary of Bengal Intellectual Society Agnimitra Paul, urged the governor to handover the case of the murder of  Bondhu Gopal Pal, his pregnant wife and their six-year-old son in their house in Murshidabad district recently, to competent and honest officers to initiate a fair investigation.

"The investigation conducted so far, as per public domain, is a cover-up," the memorandum said.

The delegation urged the governor that in such a situation "to unravel the truth of this most heinous crime, impartial,  independent investigation is called for".

The delegation also highlighted that the arrests of Congress leader and state unit spokesperson Sanmoy Bandhopadhyay on October 18 was "gross violation of fundamental rights, rights of media and muzzling of media as he was arrested for being critical about the functioning of the state and its inefficiencies."

Bandhopadhyay runs a YouTube channel Banglar Barta, where he airs political commentary, mainly criticizing Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress.

According to the delegation, his arrest indicated a serious threat to the Right of Expression and Freedom of the Press.

The governor assured the delegation that he would look into the matter appropriately, a Raj Bhawan communique said.

The delegation also comprised Arabinda Sen, Sanghamitra Pundit, Dr. Anupam Shukla, Ashmita Choudhury and Jeetendra Kumar Rampuria.
