European parliamentarians reach Kashmir to assess situation in valley
Srinagar/IBNS: A 27-member delegation of European parliamentarians reached Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday to assess the situation in the newly-formed Union Territory, media reports said.
The delegation has reached after the Indian government granted permission to hold an "unofficial" visit.
The team is visiting the region just months after the Centre scrapped Article 370 which gave special status to the region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while welcoming the delegation to India on Tuesday, expressed the hope that they have a fruitful visit to various parts of the country, including to Jammu and Kashmir.
During the meet a day ago, the Prime Minister appreciated the importance the parliamentarians attach to their relationship with India by visiting right at the beginning of their term.
The Prime Minister said that India’s relationship with the European Union is based on shared interests and common commitment to democratic values.
He said that an early conclusion of a fair and balanced BTIA is a priority for the government. Talking about the need to strengthen engagement with EU on regional and global matters, Prime Minister highlighted the importance of close international cooperation to fight terrorism.
