Jignesh Mevani threatens to call Gujrat Bandh if accused in Dalit-man beating incident not arrested in 24 hours

Ahmedabad/IBNS: Vadgram MLA Jignesh Mevani has threatened to take to streets if all the accused, involved in stripping and thrashing a Dalit man on Sunday night in the capital city, were not arrested.

The incident came to light after its video went viral in social media. The victim, 25-year-old Pragnesh Thakur happened to accidentally brush against a waiter carrying food, which spilled the contents of the plate after which brawl broke out and he was beaten with sticks by the owner of the eatery and some other people, the video showed.

The owner of the restaurant Shanker Thakor was arrested on Monday after the video triggered massive outrage while the other two accused are still at large.

The victim has been admitted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital with critical injuries.

Mevani, who is an independent MLA in Gujrat Assembly, posted the video of the beating on his twitter handle, saying, "TW: Abusive words and
violence

I will declare a Gujarat Bandh if the police does not arrest the perpetrators in 24 hours who attempted lynching of two Dalit youth in Ahmedabad yesterday night. Don't think Dalits are cowards: we believe in Constitution!"

"I have conveyed the same to the concerned police station. This Dadagiri against Dalits will not work under my eyes. Arrest them today itself or else we will be agitating on the streets," Mevani wrote on his twitter handle.

Giving an ultimatum to the Chief Minister of Gujra Vijay Rupanit, he tweeted:"The way in which the Dalit youths were tortured in Ahmedabad last night will not only be condemned but also agitated with outrage. From here, I give an ultimatum to the Chief Minister of Gujarat. If the government does not arrest and punish the accused, then the Gujarat Bandh will be announced. @CMOGuj"
