Supreme Court issues notice to ex-Kolkata Police Commissioner

New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, who is allegedly involved in the Saradha chit fund Ponzi scam case, after hearing an appeal filed by the CBI, seeking his arrest and custodial interrogation.

A bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice (CJI) S A Bobde and two other judges, said CBI, the investigating agency in the case, has to convince the court as to why it requires Kumar's custodial interrogation.

The Court issued notice to Kumar in the CBI appeal.

"He is a high-ranking police officer," said the CJI, and asked the CBI to show and explain the reasons for taking his custodial interrogation.

Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, senior lawyer appearing for the CBI, submitted before the top court of the country that his arrest in Saradha Chit Fund scam cases was required, as the investigating agency has evidence to show that Kumar had either suppressed vital evidence or destroyed them to protect someone very high.

Kumar is being investigated by the CBI for his illegal role in the Saradha chit fund Ponzi scam cases.
