God save India's economy: P Chidambaram on Nishikant Dubey's GDP comment

New Delhi/IBNS: Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey's comment where the parliamentarian dismissed the significance of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is currently reeling in the country at 4.5%.

Dubey made the comment in the backdrop of India's falling GDP figure in the second quarter of the ongoing fiscal year.

Chidambaram, who is presently in the custody of Enforcement Directorate (ED) over the INX Media case, tweeted, "GDP numbers are irrelevant, personal tax will be cut, import duties will be increased. These are BJP’s ideas of reforms. God save India’s economy."

Dubey in the Lok Sabha on Monday said, "GDP didn't exist before 1934. GDP cannot be considered as Bible, Ramayana or Mahabharata."

Congress too courted a controversy on Monday with its Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury calling Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman "Nirbala Sitharaman" while speaking on the economy.

"I can't understand whether should I call Nirmala Sitharaman or Nirbala Sitharaman," Adhir had said with an intent to take a dig at the Finance Minister.

Later, Sitharaman countered the Congress in the parliament saying, "I have been told that I am the worst Finance Minister, they're not even waiting for me to finish my term. I told them that please give me more ideas, we will work on it. If there's a government that listens, it is PM Modi's government."
