Court will strike down 'unconstitutional' CAB: P Chidambaram in Rajya Sabha
New Delhi/IBNS: At a time the Centre is looking to pass the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the upper house, Congress Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram on Wednesday said the bill will ultimately be struck down by the judiciary terming it as "unconstitutional".
Lashing out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, Chidambaram said, "The bill will fall in the laps of the judges (court). With due respect, judges are the non-elected people who will decide whether the bill is constitutional or not and that will be a slap on the face of Parliament."
"I am absolutely sure that the law will be struck down by the court as unconstitutional," the former Union Finance Minister, who is attending Parliament after getting bail over INX Media case days ago, said.
Also Chidambaram accused the BJP of only trying to push its "Hindutva agenda".
After the bill, which has led to widespread protests in northeastern states, was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday midnight, the Rajya Sabha is debating it on Wednesday.
Though the BJP government does not enjoy majority in the Rajya Sabha, it is likely to sail through with the support of several regional parties including Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Janata Dal (United).
