New Delhi/IBNS: The women Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs in the Lok Sabha torn apart Congress leader Rahul Gandhi protesting against his "Rape in India" remark at a Jharkhand rally and also demanded an apology from the Wayanad parliamentarian.

Rahul, who was in an election campaign in Jharkhand on Thursday, said, "Narendra Modi used to say Make in India. But it is Rape in India all over. Everyday in newspapers, some news or the other about rape comes out."

Training his guns at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul had said, "Narendra Modi remains silent when his own MLAs rape women. He said Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (save girls and educate them) but he didn't say from whom to save."

The protest against the Wayanad MP was led by Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani who has snatched the Congress bastion Amethi from Rahul in the 2019 General Elections.

Irani was joined by other women MPs like Locket Chatterjee, Deboshree Chowdhury.

Demanding an apology from the former Congress president, Irani said, "Rahul Gandhi is touching 50 so he does not understand such a statement invites rape in India," and added, "He should be punished," followed by "shame, shame" chant from other BJP parliamentarians.

The Amethi MP has also urged opposition women  MPs from DMK and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Kanimozhi and Supriya Sule respectively, to rise above politics and condemn it. "It is a shame that the Congress party can't rise above politics and party line even in the case of rape," Irani said referring to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.

Last week, Rahul at a Jharkhand rally had said India is now perceived by the world as the "rape capital" while referring to the rape incidents in Hyderabad, Unnao and other parts of the country.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice over the ruckus created after the BJP MPs protested against Rahul's comment.
