CAA protest in Delhi: Demonstrators clash with police

New Delhi/IBNS: Protesters, who were demonstrating against the recently passed Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA, clashed with the police and resorted to violence in New Delhi's New Friends Colony area on Sunday.

According to media reports, the protesters broke cars and set at least three buses on fire during their demonstration.

Police reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

The cops have taken momentary control of the area, which now resembles a war zone, and have deployed in large numbers to ensure security, reported NDTV.

Police have closed vehicular movement from Okhla Underpass to Sarita Vihar due to the clash.

Several parts of India, including Assam and West Bengal, have witnessed protests over the Act recently.

The law grants citizenship to all non-Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan on or before Dec 31, 2014.
