New Delhi/UNI/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid homage to Indian soldiers and lauded their courage on the occasion of Vijay Diwas.

"In 1971 on this day, our army had created history. This day will be always written in golden letters," Mr Modi tweeted in Hindi.

'Vijay Diwas' or Victory Day is commemorated every year on December 16 as a mark of victory over Pakistan during the 'Bangladesh war of independence'.

The end of the war had resulted in the unilateral and unconditional surrender of the Pakistan Army and subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh. On this day in 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, had surrendered.
